OVERCOMING UNGODLY HABIT

OVERCOMING

And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures. (Acts 17:2 kjv)

So, Paul had a manner (HABIT) he subjected himself to! It was his habit to find ways of preaching the gospel. That was his habit; he compelled himself to that habit!

A quick study in the above Bible text leads us to a stunning truth! We must willingly develop godly habits! Many people expect to become automatically godly in habit when they give their lives to Christ but it doesn’t work that way. We must willingly decide to subject ourselves to good habits! Not for us to be accepted by God but because God has accepted us.

We are either programmed for positivity or negativity by our habits. Let’s use an everyday experience for example: a man who is addicted to much beer and liquor is prone to die of health complications and another man is addicted to much fruits and vegetables will remain healthier! Our character even as Christians who has been set free from the law ought to be godlike!

Have noticed something about animals? Any animal born into wildlife will act wild and even a lion born into a domestic life will be domestic. Just like wild animals, human beings are born with “wild” instincts; they come uncultured and untamed into the world which automatically makes them act wild much faster than acting good. A child doesn’t need a teacher to know how to tell lies, steal, fight and even engage in per-marital sex. If a child is left to continue wild he will grow wild! No wonder the Scripture says

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)

The message bible even explains it far much better

Point your kids in the right direction—when they’re old they won’t be lost.

In South-Eastern and most part of South-South Nigeria, there is a popular adage among the Igbo speaking tribes that says “You can’t learn to be left handed in old age”

Another popular adage also says “after dancing it goes up to you waist”

When someone is grown, it becomes very hard to overcome the habits with which he has grown whether it is negative or positive. And everything one does will either result to something negative or positive. Even as a new Christian, one ought to develop habits of studying the scriptures, preaching the gospel, loving those around them and helping the poor! It develops such Christians to become better matured Christians. Some Christians are matured in the knowledge of the Scriptures but they are not matured in doing the word!

Today, make it a habit to act godly! If you have the spirit of God in you, live like God so that people cannot question your claims. In all your behaviours, behave like God! A Christian shouldn’t eat anything and anyhow, a Christian should involve in activities that is health risk and life risk! Part of the reasons why the law was given was to regulate even the eating habits of the Jews and how they treat their fellow men! Paul wrote

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

You see! Do not copy the behaviours and customs of this world! Even if you have copied it, try to let God transform you by changing the way you think! You can actually overcome bad habit by realizing that God doesn’t hate you because of your bad habits and yet doesn’t like your habit! You need to accept Jesus who makes you a new creature! If you have accepted Him, you need to trust in Him and look up to God! Stop thinking about worldly things and also stop thinking you can handle it on your own. I will be summarizing with Romans 12:1-2 according to the Message Bible

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”
