Excellence is the act or state of being extremely good or outstanding. So when something or someone is excellent, the person is not good but extremely good. It is a superior merit. That means that Spirit of excellence indicates a spirit that makes one come to that level of being extremely good.
The spirit of excellence is responsible for the results of the attitude of the bearer! But the bearer of that spirit must act for the spirit to be portrayed or be brought into limelight in the physical. The bible says concerning Daniel in Daniel 6:3
“Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. ”
Other translations clearly defined why Daniel was preferred above others, because he distinguished himself having known and haven acted on the excellent spirit that was in him. “Daniel so distinguished himself among the administration because he was of an extra ordinary spirit”
A closer look at this portion of the bible shows us that there was a deliberate move to outstand others and this deliberate move was of knowledge that he was of an excellent spirit! Daniel needed no prophet to tell him he had an excellent spirit. The Good News bible explains better, until you show it, it is not known, until you show it you’re not sure of it! Daniel had an excellent spirit but that makes no difference if Daniel did just what others could do. Until you begin to prosecute or defend cases in the law court, you are not a lawyer!
Daniel was aware he was made of that spirit but then he had to show it for others to really identify him with that spirit. Paul said to Timothy in 2 Tim 2:15
“Study, to show thyself approved” That does not mean Timothy was not approved but if he doesn’t show that he is approved then his approval is a waste of time. The Bible says we were saved for good works that we might show forth God’s glory! So, God always want the world to witness His awesome power through us. The same way, Daniel made up his mind to show that he was made of an excellent spirit.
The aramic word translated Spirit here is “ruwach” which means “mind”. We can see that Daniel had an excellent mind! Excellent results are products of excellent mind; excellent mind is a product of excellent spirit. The same way, a bad result is a product of a bad mind. A bad mind results from the flesh! That means Daniel walked according to the leading of the Spirit.
We are set for excellence by just knowing we are made of an excellent spirit. James wrote in James 1:18
“Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. ”
Remember that excellence means outstanding! When something is extremely good, it is excellent. Now James is saying that we were given birth to, that we might be the first of all he created, the best of all he created. God made the new creation man to be excellent! No wonder, Peter wrote
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: ” 1 Peter 1:23-24.
Aramic version used “infallible seed”
Having known this, what do we do?
We decide to work it out! Daniel decided to show and we must decide to show that we have an excellent Spirit. Paul told us that we are “God’s masterpiece! Created for good works” Ephesians 2:10, we are God’s masterpiece! You only learn to live like one when you know you are one! When you are aware of who you are, you will stop struggling to become, rather you’ll start living out what you’ve become. The bible asked us to work out “our salvation”. The salvation is already ours but we need to bring it out…. it don’t have to remain within!
“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Philipians 2:12
We must set our mind on excellent things for us to produce excellent results. God called us to His glory and excellence (1 Peter 1:3-4)! Our mind must be on these things! With excellence you excel. People who do not live out excellence are people who have forgotten who they are. (2 Peter 1:9)
“But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.”
The remedy is in verse 10
“Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:”
You can only confirm by studying to show yourself approved as we saw in 2 Timothy 2:15. Your mind is set on something only through studying! A lawyer reasons like a lawyer because he studied law!
Finally, the Spirit of excellence is not different from the Holy Spirit. Exodus 31:3.
Bezalel was a man filled with the Spirit of excellence… for excellent result! The Spirit of God comes with wisdom, knowledge and with all kinds of skills. You see, in the Old Testament, God’s spirit is limited only to few chosen people but now, that Spirit has been poured on all flesh! Joel talked about it.
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: “ Joel 2:28, Acts 2:17
We must understand that God is always willing to see us and make us bear excellent results! Peter had that Spirit and when he talked to the crowd that gathered about Jesus, 3000 men alone were converted without a microphone! It can only be done by the power of the Holy Spirit.
KEYS TO NOTE:
You must be born again. Jesus said in John 3:6-7
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”
You must be filled with the Holy Spirit. That Spirit enables you to bear results as noted in Act 1:8
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. ”
You must set your mind on things above and renew it daily through study of God’s word. We can see that in Romans 12:1-2
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. ”
Just like Daniel decided to show that he was excellent, we must also show we are excellent by our standard of living, by our absolute trust in God to make all things excellent and by a deliberated walk, according to the Spirit.
