HOLY WEEK: What’s Holy about Holy Week and Easter?
Is Holy Week Holy? No! Every week is a holy week for a believer! Does Jesus resurrect on Easter days? No! Jesus resurrected a long time ago and is forever living! Then what’s the fuss about Holy Weeks and Easter celebration? Its for the commemoration of what Jesus did for us before the cross, on the cross and after the cross! Just like we would celebrate our Birthdays, wedding anniversary, project completion and all that, we are also celebrating all that Jesus did for us!
Easter brings all believers together! On Easter every Christian is declaring that Jesus was a dead man but is a living eternal King whose kingdom has no end! Remember, he was dead but death couldn’t hold him for long… Even the tomb where he was laid was borrowed because he wasn’t going to spend time there!
Easter season is not a time to argue and criticize how a denomination celebrates their Easter, it is a time to unanimously declare with one voice that “God is not dead!” The devil is a defeated foe… He would love us to argue the relevance of Holy Week, the relevance of Easter and all that, he would want to shift our focus from the reason for the season to the season only!
I saw many people going out to party, I saw many boyfriends taking their girlfriends to places, I saw families driving into resorts and spas… Easter Sunday was full of fun and fun and fun! But wait a minute! Yes! They are happy because they know the season but truth is, do they know the reason for the season? There were so many banners and flyers out there advertising Easter parties and when I looked at those banners and flyers, non of them had the reason for the season, non of them talked about Jesus, non of them talked about the resurrection… They only knew that there is a season called Easter and I wondered what they were celebrating!
Are they celebrating the end of fast? Are they celebrating the end of self-control? Are they celebrating the end of saving a little out of their spending? What exactly are they celebrating? Because non of those parties talked about Jesus, talked about the resurrection of a man or declared to the atheists that God is not and cannot die! Then Christians who were supposed to employ every means to declare Jesus to these people are busy debating and arguing over the season rather than using the platform and opportunity that comes with Easter to declare Jesus and Jesus alone!
When you understand the reason for the season, you understand the reason for the reason! You’re the reason why Jesus came… He took our sins to the cross, he brought all of himself to us! We died with him, we resurrected as him! Jesus made us his identical twin and that is why God sees us as his only begotten son! Easter is the story of God’s love, the story of God’s mercy and the story of who God is!
What then should we do in Lent, Holy Week and Easter day? It is not to debate the methods of the celebration. When we know the reason for the season, we begin to celebrate it the right way. We have to utilize the opportunity of Lent and Holy Week for reflections, retreats and teachings about the person of Jesus and what he came to do on earth! And then on Easter, we have to share this love of God en masse! Its not like we have to wait for Easter or the season, no! But as a Church and family, it should be a time we focus more on the world than on ourselves! It is a time we take over the social media, the publications, the clubs, the brothels and every other available spaces to talk about Jesus, God’s love for the world, God’s solution to sin and the fall of man and the heritage we have in God if we believe!
“All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).” – Isaiah 7:4
“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
“And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14
With this short message, I want to wish you a happy Easter celebration from all of us at George’s Diary!
