“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
One day I said something concerning the above verse, one of my friends who is a Pastor really wanted to fight me verbally! He actually fought me… What actually was the bible saying in the above verse? It is saying exactly what you’ve read, exactly what you are seeing and not something that might happen in the future. The moment you believed in God, you became a brand new man, not just brand new but a perfect creature! In Christ, you are no longer that prostitute, that thief, that liar, that cheat or whatever it is you ever done. You became as perfect as Jesus Christ and as powerful as him! But how come you still find yourself doing things you ought not to have done? That is the question that always comes up when I discuss this with people.
The moment you believed in Jesus, his divinity, his death and his resurrection, you became new and perfect! Wait a second… You need to understand who is you before you think you really didn’t become new. The real you is not your body or your mind but your spirit! It is your spirit that became new, it became exactly like that of Jesus and no kind of misbehavior can ever change that, no amount of mistakes can ever make your spirit corrupt! As unbelievers, we were born in sin but as believers we were born in righteousness. Knowing this truth changes the way you think, the way you pray and the way you live your Christian life. A man is a spirit that lives in a body, it is the spirit that will go to heaven and the body will expire here on earth! Jesus said
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John 14:12
Jesus knew people would not believe this because it sounds too good to be true and that was why he started by saying “verily, verily”, and look at that! He said anyone who believes on him will do the works that Jesus does. He didn’t say anyone who goes to mountain to pray, anyone who lives a perfect or anyone who fasts and pray often! He simply said it is anyone who believes on him! But there are still in-depth things about that statement which many have always misinterpreted. We have always thought that Jesus said we will do greater things that he did on earth and just that but no that weren’t what he said, let’s look at that stamen again. First he talked about anyone who believes on him, he was referring to the disciples, he was referring to anyone who believes which means it can be you if you believe! Then, he also said “…the works that I do, he shall do also…” that is another great saying, he wasn’t talking about the work he did, he was talking about the work he is doing and he hasn’t stop doing them, he is still doing them and then we who believe on him can do exactly what he is doing because we have become exactly like him without reservation! And then Jesus continued by saying, “… and greater works than these shall he do, because I go to my father.” Jesus didn’t say we will do greater or lesser work than him, he said we will do works greater than what we have witnessed and he gave a reason which is “…because I go to my father.” That will lead us to another great insight!
When Jesus said he will go to the father, he wasn’t going alone to present himself but he was going to presents us as holy people to the father! We will do greater works than what we have experienced because we are seated with Jesus on the throne! Just like God was in heaven and yet in Jesus while he was on earth, we are in heaven and yet inside our bodies here on earth! Someone will say, “I don’t believe that…,” that is why it can’t work for that person because Jesus clearly said it is anyone who believes. However, let me show you what the bible said concerning this in Ephesians 2:6
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
The Bible didn’t say that we will be raised up together with Christ, it didn’t say we will sit together in the heavenly places with Christ rather, it says that we have been raised up together with Christ and we have been made to sit together in heavenly places in Christ! Now the bible didn’t say we deliberately decided to sit together in Christ but we were made to sit in heavenly places in Christ! Jesus made it on the cross; we were sanctified and made holy! We are now qualified and our qualification is only in Christ! We are not seated in heaven with Christ… I have always preached that we are seated with Christ but I have come to discover that we are not seated with Christ but we are seated in Christ! That is why we can do every single thing that Jesus has ever done, is doing and will do! When God wants to look at us he looks at himself because Christ is God! Now God sees us just as he sees himself!
These things are so big for the human mind to comprehend and they are so unbelievable because we don’t see it physically. On that note, the bible said
“That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. ” Ephesians 2:7
The riches of God’s grace expressed in his kindness towards us is exceedingly numerous! That is to say, it has no end and it can never be exhausted. We may not see these things with our physical eyes, we may not feel it with our emotions but the bible didn’t say we must feel it, it says it will be revealed in ages to come! In verse 8 Paul explained that God has done his own part which is “grace” and then we need to do our own part which is “faith”… You just need to believe, you don’t need to see it or feel it! Just believe in walk in what you believe! This is how he puts it,
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: ”
