“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom”. – 2 Corinthians 3:17 NIV
Very early this morning, I came across this portion of the scripture again. It stood there glaringly speaking volumes of mysteries. I wouldn’t want to make it a long note but I would like you to note few things about this very portion of the scripture.
The Lord, is the Spirit. When we talk about the Holy Spirit, we are simply talking about the Spirit of Jesus. The presence of this Spirit brings freedom! Paul was writing concerning the old testament and the new. He clearly distinguished the both by exposing the limitations of the Old Testament. He went further to explain that even to this day, the limitations are still there and will not be rolled away unless one turns to Jesus. He wrote,
“Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away”. – 2 Corinthians 15-16 NIV
Before Jesus left the earth as a man, he made a statement that changed everything, a statement that brought the ministry of Moses to an end, a statement that the religious class of that time couldn’t help but wonder why someone would dare make such a statement. Jesus having seen how people have struggled to be free and to no avail bodily declared
“I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the father except through me” – John 14:16
Moses would dare not make such a statement but even if he did, the Jewish nation wouldn’t see it as much a problem. But if Moses didn’t say so, if Abraham didn’t say so, how dare Jesus, the son of a Carpenter make such claim? They were deeply troubled because that was the end of the ministry of Moses. Jesus even said in another place earlier,
“And you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” – John 8:32
This is what sets Christianity apart from worlds religions. Other Prophets and teachers came pointing to God in their own limited ways, they tried explaining but Jesus came pointing at himself as the solution and the explanation. Others came looking upward but Jesus came looking inward. Other Prophets died, there adherents claimed they went to heaven but Jesus died, resurrected on earth, ascended as a body but remained as a Spirit. By his ascension, it means the ransom was accepted by God, it means we have been presented before God through Jesus and by his Spirit dwelling among us, it means we don’t need the law because we have the Spirit. By the Spirit, Jesus is everywhere but by flesh he is at one at one time.
By showcasing himself as the truth, it was the same thing as saying “you shall know me and I will set you free” since he claims to be that truth. No wonder, the man Jesus ascended but left the Spirit behind as he promised. In other words, Jesus is still spiritually present on earth and physically present in heaven while every believer is physically present on earth and spiritually present in heaven. Don’t be confused, Jesus is physically present in the right hand of God to represent us before God and we are physically present on earth to represent Jesus before the world.
We don’t set ourselves free by knowing the truth, the truth sets us free the moment we know it. It is not something we do by ourselves. Jesus isn’t teaching us how to set ourselves free, he is teaching us that he is the one setting us free. This brings us back to the text of this devotional. The Holy Spirit is Jesus, the name of the Holy Spirit is not “Holy Spirit”, holy spirit isn’t a name but an attribute. That Spirit is the spirit of truth because Jesus is the truth and where that spirit is, there is freedom because the truth sets us free. Let’s see how Jesus puts it
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” – John 16:13 NIV
There are ways Jesus communicated while physically on earth. He spoke about his spiritual manifestation on earth as something that was yet to come because he was operating as a man and not as a spirit at that time. When he talked about his second coming, he wasn’t talking about his spiritual presence, he was talking about his second physical manifestation where physical eyes can see him, touch him and even smell him. He already said he is the truth and then he talked about the coming (manifestation) of the Spirit of truth (himself), this he did in a manner that wouldn’t confuse his disciples.
I want to add something to that text, its not like am adding a new thing, I want to make a more clearer interpretation of it. Paul was like saying
“Jesus is the same with the Holy Spirit, where the Spirit of Jesus is acknowledged (known) freedom in guaranteed”
That is all you need to be free! Forget about every other method, you have tried it, I have tried it and it never worked. It was the moment I acknowledged the Lordship of Jesus and the moment I ask for the indwelling of the Spirit that I experienced freedom. It is freedom from sin, manipulations, failure and everything you can name. It is freedom to serve God and worship him without been limited by my weakness. The Spirit has broken out, it has broken our walls down and heaven has come among us… Are you a believer? If yes, then its in you.
