“Just then a man with an evil spirit in him came into the synagogue and screamed, ” What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are – you are God’s holy messenger!” Mark 1:23-24
It is always scary to imagine that devil come to our Churches many times, he host himself in people and even sing praises! Watching what happened here closely, you’ll discover that the man with a demon was a member of the Synagogue and perhaps might have been among the decision making board. He might have been a well revered and committed member of the faith of Judaism and might have been known by all as a believer.
The demon inside of that man knows how to distract people with lies and might have played various roles in seeing that so many priest become distracted in the process of spiritual exercises by praising them.
What do I mean? This demon manifested in the middle of a meeting. In the previous verse Jesus was teaching what the people have never heard before, it was something beyond what the teachers of the law ever knew and the people were amazed. Just then, the demon began to manifest. The Bible said it was beyond what teachers of Law could teach. I know exactly the message Jesus was preaching, it is the message of God’s unfailing love! A message of God’s unconditional love which has not been known for ages.
While manifesting, the demon said Jesus is a messenger of God. Many ministers may be easily carried away by that confession but Jesus was not moved by that. Jesus was beyond a messenger of God! Islam claims that Jesus was a messenger of God too but there was something beyond it! Only demons can instigate people to think that Jesus is just a messenger from God!
In verse 25, we see that Jesus don’t condone demonic activities even in among the gathering of the chosen. When the demon called Jesus a messenger of God, it was trying to limit Jesus. Had Jesus listened to him, he would be limited. There have always been messengers from God, Moses, Elijah, Isaiah and others were all messengers of God! They performed miracles too but non of them were able to cast a demon out. Had Jesus accepted the lies of the demon because of how true it sounds, he might have been limited!
Jesus wasn’t a messenger from God, Jesus isn’t an angel. Jesus is God himself manifested as man. Jesus did admit he was sent by God but he declared that he is one with the father which means he sent himself. Jesus is the word of God made flesh! In John 1:1, we see that the word of God is God. Not a second God but God himself. Messengers are sent by God’s word but that word that send people came himself in the person of Jesus.
That same demon might have met with the founders of diverse religion and denominations that claims Jesus isn’t God nor the Son of God but a messenger. We can see that it wasn’t how Jesus reacted to this demon that called him a messenger that he reacted to the demons that called him the son of God. Look at Luke 4:41
“Demons also went out from many people, screaming, ” you are the Son of God!” Jesus gave the demons an order and would not let them speak, because they knew that he was the Messiah.”
You see this? In the previous place we read, Jesus didn’t even paid attention to what that demon said and when these ones admitted he is the Son of God, he restrained them from speaking further. Why? Jesus wants the new creation to talk about him and not demons. Demons can’t say the truth, they will always coat lies with truth. Jesus didn’t give them audience nor did he create a platform for them to preach.
With these examples we can see that demons can visit Christian gatherings and even pretend to be an angel or messenger of light. It is very easily to believe that someone is a true minister of the gospel when that person admits that Jesus is the Son of God. The bible said
“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” 2 Corinthians 11:14
Just like Jesus, we must always discern and know when God is speaking through a man and when the demon is speaking. The devil knew that Jesus is the Son of God but yet he asked Jesus to prove if he is the Son of God. Jesus knew there was nothing to prove to the devil. Trying to prove it will also mean magnifying the devil’s opinions. Many times demons even speak through men on pulpit or through people we see in Church, he may inspire them to say things that will look like truth but lies that can destroy and thwart our mission.
In these cases, we must always be ready to deal with those situations immediately. It also came to a point where Peter told Jesus to stop saying he was going to die. It sounded positive and sounded like faith talk but the devil had inspired Peter to say that. What did Jesus do? He ordered the devil to cease from interfering.
A believer who is committed to God’s word will always know when people are speaking for the demon or for God. Paul said in Galatians 1:8
“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a divine curse!”
What was the message they preached? It is the message of John 3:16, that God so loved the world that he gave Jesus his Son, that anyone who believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Demons may talk about the Son of God but they can’t encourage you to trust in his finished work on the cross. Demons may tell you that Jesus is the Son of that God who doesn’t love you. Well, a God who doesn’t love you don’t exist. Demons may tell you about the Son of God but give you more loads to carry in order to reach God.
Demons can’t tell you that Jesus is the only way to God, they may admit Jesus as God’s son, they don’t have a choice anyway but they can’t tell you that God loves you and want you saved. It is very easy to detect when demon has come to Church. They may talk about Jesus, but they are not saying the whole truth. Its always little truth missed in deadly lies. They cook it up to smell good while the dish is rotten.
The demonically possessed man in the Synagogue declared that Jesus was sent by God but it can’t go further to talk about the nature of Jesus. Had Jesus paid attention to them simply because they admitted his Sonship, he could have been easily distracted along with the people listening to him. Many has been distracted by demonic inspirations.
Once we hear things that doesn’t go down well with the scriptures, we must be sharp to counter it at once and exercise our authoritative power over the devil. Today, Christian leaders are finding ways to make Islam look accepted by us simply because Islam also talked about holy Jesus who was sent as a messenger… Isn’t that exactly the message of the demons?
You can also prevent yourself from being an agent of demon by filling your mind with the word of God. The devil does not posses a believer in God. He only finds a way to stuff his mind with lies! No wonder, Paul encouraged us to renew our mind daily with God’s word and not with other things. Paul in Romans 12:2 said
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will”
Paul wrote further in Ephesians 4:23
“to be renewed in the spirit of your minds”
Have you listened to people who claimed they went to heaven and hell and came back with a message. While some of those revelations may seem like truth, others present God as very mean and angry God who can’t even condone perfumes and powder! Of course they talk about God but they load you with burdens heavier than that of Moses.
Jesus silenced the demon at once. He said to him “Be quiet and come out!”. Today, we too can silence the demons by filling ourselves with the word of God and preaching that word to the world! It is when preachers of God’s word are lacking that the devil becomes a General Overseer of a Church! We can silence the devil by not remaining silent.
When next a demon come to your Church, don’t give him a space.
