STORY: GOLD IN THE DUST… 3

“Papa, you know we haven’t paid her bride price… We have not done any of the traditional rite. Now that she’s dead, how do we go about it?” Emeka spoke up after a long silence in his sitting room

:

“We’ve informed her family of her death. Everyone understands that death during childbirth is not anyone’s fault. You aren’t marrying a dead woman.” Ichie Anyim told him

:

“But Papa… I am responsible for that child, she died as a result of childbirth. The nurse said her health conditions were a bit complicated as at the moment of child bearing. Its not like am marrying a dead woman but we have to be involved…”

:

“Involved in what?” Ichie Anyim interrupted “that she gave birth to a baby girl or that she died while giving birth? Isn’t that a curse? She gave birth to a girl… As if it wasn’t enough, she died! Who knows if that child is not Ogbanje? Eeh?”

:

“Papa… What do we do now?” Emeka asked and added “because one thing is sure. If she had given birth to a boy, we would have taken care of the child…”

:

“We will do nothing.  It is very simple… Their daughter died while giving birth. They have to deal with it, you have done enough by footing the hospital bills. You can even support her burial but you must be careful how you help because they can claim you’ve used their daughter for rituals…” Ichie Anyim turned to a woman who had been sitting silently and pacing into the air “Mama Emeka… What is it? Talk now… Or don’t you have anything to say?”

:

“Dim… I am a woman. I know how I will feel if it’s my daughter that gave up the ghost in such manner… I think we shouldn’t be talking about these things till her funeral is done. About the Child… Emeka should take responsibility of that Child! Isn’t it his child? When that thing down his waist was looking for any lady to devour why didn’t he think of situations that will arise? What’s the difference between a boy and a girl except that our society have redefined the meaning of values?” She vented

:

“Taaa! Shut up woman!” Ichie Anyim commanded “why did I even allowed you to talk? Women… That’s how they talk rubbish! You women are just the same thing! We only marry you people because we want to help you. That girl is not coming into this family unless you have a way of turning her to a boy.”

:

“Errmm… Papa” Emeka called “I am not going to be a weakling… I will stand as a man and go my way. I didn’t kill her, I am not going to marry a dead woman and she didn’t even gave us a boy… We would have considered that.”

:

“Exactly!” Ichie Anyim exclaimed looking at his wife who sneered at him and turned away from his looks with palms fixed to her jaws “Emeka… You will just have to go back to Lagos and continue with your business. I will handle everything!
