ASKGEORGE ®: SHOULD THE CHURCH APPRECIATE MASQUERADE?

“George please sorry to bother you, some one posted a picture of Reverend  Father dancing with masquerade and a lot of dialogue was going on. D poster said it was in St. Paul seminary ukpo, for a Rev father or seminarians to dance with a masquerade in the name of festival and culture in the remembrance of St Paul. And some were abusing themselves because of this. Please is it right? What does darkness has to do with light? Please i believe u will teach me better, thanks in advance” – Uche, Nigeria

Dear Uche,

:

Thanks for believing that God can use me by the power of the Holy Spirit to teach you better. I also wish to post this publicly so that others can learn from it.

:

Even before the advent of Christianity to Igbo land, masquerades has been in vogue and it is associated with darkness. Why? Before anyone is eligible to wear mask and masquerade, they are initiated into it and the process of the initiation showcases loyalty to the African traditional gods and spirits… Those spirits are in no way related to God. How do I know? The Bible gave us an exposure on what the nature of His Spirit looks like… Galatians 5:22-23

:

The Spirit of God produces joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self control.

:

It is quite a contrast with the spirits the masquerades are meant to represent. The masquerades are violent, full of evil, unloving, unkind and they seem not to have control over themselves. They are just the replica of what is obtainable in Gal 5:19-21… They are simply evil no matter how entertaining they seem to be because they are guided by the flesh and inspired by the devil

:

Therefore, a minister of the gospel and Christians at large are not supposed to be supportive of those cultures let alone dancing with them! Paul said in 1 Cor 8:9

:

“Be careful, however, not to let your freedom of action make who are weak in the faith fall into sin.”

:

For a Pastor or Reverend Father to be seen dancing with masquerade is not a sight that glorifies God! No matter the excuse… Men who are in position of influence ought to be the most careful. There is no relationship between light and darkness… God told us not to be equally yoked with unbelievers and also told us not to conform or be in agreement with the practices of this world. God bless you.
