No matter what happens where we are, we owe that place a duty as Christians! It doesn’t matter the reasons you can bring up or the perception with which you would want to debunk the obvious truth! The duty we owe the nation, the world and even our enemies is love and positive prayers!

It doesn’t matter what they’ve done to us, it doesn’t matter how they seem to be suppressing us… Jesus commands that we love our enemies, care and pray for them. It is anti-Christ to hate, abuse and even wish our enemies death, talk more of our national leaders. No matter who seemed to have encouraged you to hate and abuse the leaders, do not fall in for it!

While Stephen was been stoned to death, he had reasons to curse the perpetrators but he did not! He rather prayed for God’s mercy upon them (Act 7:60). He imitated Jesus who instead of calling down fire to destroy those who wanted to get Him killed, He pleaded for mercy! (Luke 23:34)

Jesus said in Matthew 5:44 “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”

In Nigeria, a large percentage of Christans are hoping that the president who is a Muslim dies in London. They say he has caused a lot of pains to Christians and therefore they are praying that he doesn’t make it back to Nigeria. While there is no fact to their claims, they have no right to wish him death! Rather we are asked to pray for our leaders. Someone opined that Jesus didn’t necessarily gave us a prayer point for people and he suggested that praying for people may include praying for them to die. Well, it may sound convincing only to those ignorant of the scripture. Paul wrote to Timothy saying

“I exhort therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings, be made for all men; for kings and all that are in high place; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who would have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth.” – 1Timothy 2:1‭-‬4 ASV

Now you see the kind of prayer we should be praying for people? First, Paul says we should pray for all men and then for Kings and people who are in high places, that is people who are occupying respected positions! By doing so, we are showcasing a very high level of godliness and it is acceptable in the sight of God! Paul also says that it is God’s desire that all men come to the knowledge of the truth! This means it should part of our prayers for our enemies and people we don’t like.

On that note, we ought to pray for our President, we ought to pray for the nation and we ought to walk in love regardless of the circumstances we are facing! No matter what had been said about the leader of your nation, you owe him that duty of praying for him to come to the knowledge of truth!

Hate it or like it… God is disappointed with you when you open your mouth to curse your enemies rather than pray for them.

Are you still going to harden your heart or will God’s word be held above every reasoning? The choice is yours to make!

Remember… It’s through us that God will heal our land!
