“Later, Jesus talked to the people again. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never live in darkness. They will have the light that gives life.” – John. 8:12 ERV

When Jesus said “I am the light of the world”, he was referring to himself as the revelation of God! In a time when religion has taken over everything including common sense, Jesus needed to communicate this big truth. Remember, the Bible said that God’s people perish because of ignorance. They lived in ignorance not knowing who God really is. Light means revelation and Jesus is the revelation of God.

We must not forget the incident that happened before He made this statement. He had saved a woman not just from being condemed but from her sins too. In this manner Jesus revealed God as a loving father who want His people saved rather than destroyed. Jesus said to her “I do not judge you. Go and sin no more” (see John 8:3-11). She was completely set free from the bondage of sin when a knowledge entered! What is that knowledge? It is the fact that Jesus didn’t come to destroy and condemn us just like the law did but to save us from sin. She outrightly believed in Jesus as her savior because it happened right before her very eyes and she experienced that salvation all right round.

Jesus continued “Whoever follows me will never live in darkness. They will have the light that gives life.” Just like the woman was empowered by salvation to go and sin no more, when we come to Jesus, we are empowered never to walk in darkness anymore because we have come to the light! Whoever comes to the knowledge of Christ and accepts it cannot continue to dwell in the dark. Jesus said in the same scene “a slave does not stay with a family forever. But a son belongs to the family forever. So if the Son makes you free, you are really free.” – John. 8:35‭-‬36 ERV

He first admitted the limitations of a slave which signifies people who are in darkness. People who have been stricken off their rights! A slave is not part of the family and a slave is in bondage! Now Jesus made a profound statement saying “A son belongs to the family… If the Son makes you free, you are really free”. You see that? Prior to that, Jesus have said “you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” – John. 8:32 ERV

What is that truth? The truth is Jesus! In John 14:6, Jesus made that declaration, He declared Himself to be the truth! Without the knowledge of Jesus as God’s son who came to set us free, we will continue to walk in ignorance.

Many are in the church today but they are still walking in darkness because they’ve not really come to the knowledge of Christ. They were simply born into the system of attending Church programs. The Bible says “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not defeated it.” John. 1:5 ERV

There is no possibility for darkness to defeat the light. I mean, there is no way someone can come to the knowledge of Christ and not be free from ignorance (darkness). We are saved from darkness into God’s marvelous light so that the world can really experience God! Paul wrote:

“God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us new people so that we would spend our lives doing the good things he had already planned for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10 ERV

I am loving this! God set us free from darkness so that we can spend our entire life living out His glory and showcasing it through the good things He has planned and empowered us to do.

God bless you.
