BEING LIKE GOD – BEING PERFECT

The report of creation has it that when God was about to make man, He made a profound statement which clearly explains the true nature of who we are and how we are supposed to live. From all ramifications at the instances of creation, God is a loving personality and the mood that the Bible communicates showcases a smiling God, a happy and peaceful God… It also shows a humble God!

:

After the completion of every task, God would carefully study what He made and certify it good! In this sense we can see God as someone who is positive, happy, loving, peaceful, humble and of course perfect! It is after the display of His true nature that He said “let us make man in our image” and it didn’t end with that, He wanted to make man like Him both in nature and character! Let’s see how it was presented

:

“So God created humans in his own image. He created them to be like himself. He created them male and female. God blessed them and said to them, “Have many children. Fill the earth and take control of it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the air. Rule over every living thing that moves on the earth.” – Gen. 1:27‭-‬28 ERV

:

You see, God had to display His nature first and then proposed to make man who can literally be “God” in this planet! God made man and handed the earth over to the man! The essence of this teaching is not to narrate the creation story but to point out that God wants us to be like Him! Of a truth, the fall of Adam brought a default in nature where the flesh is fighting against the workings of the Spirit but through the redemption and adoption necessitated by Jesus, we can truly live and express the true nature of God!

:

The question is, what is the nature of God? I will answer it in one word! God’s nature is summed up in a word “LOVE”. John reports that God is love (1 John 4:8)! And he also wrote that anyone who doesn’t love don’t truly know God! You see, God has been portrayed in so many ways, some say He is a fire, some say He is something else but in summary He is love! Jesus explained the perfection of God in one word too and it is “LOVE”. God’s perfection is showcased in His love for believers and unbelievers alike! As Jesus is the true expression of God, we can see how He loved sinners and how He wanted them saved rather than condemned. Sin is of the devil, the sinful nature is an enemy to the Godly nature and people who are in sin are living in enemity with God but God desires that everyone come to Him in repentance, He is patient with sinners and this shows us that God’s nature is truly love in its entirety (Ezekiel 18:23)! Jesus said

:

“love your enemies. Pray for those who treat you badly. If you do this, you will be children who are truly like your Father in heaven. He lets the sun rise for all people, whether they are good or bad. He sends rain to those who do right and to those who do wrong.” Mt. 5:44-45 ERV

:

You see that? Jesus didn’t just encouraged us to love our enemies, He said it is a way of truly being like God! Every believer has the tendency of not loving someone not because they don’t have the ability but because they’ve allowed the flesh to thrive! In so doing, they’re not being like God! They’re not expressing the true nature of God. Jesus said “we’ll be be children who are truly like our Father in heaven” if we love our enemies!

:

The love we are supposed to express isn’t just love for people who love us but love for people who doesn’t love us! In fact, anybody can love those that love them but it’s not easy in human distorted nature to love people who hates them! However, in Christ we have received the ability to be and act like God. Jesus said

:

“If you love only those who love you, why should you get a reward for that? Even the tax collectors do that. And if you are nice only to your friends, you are no better than anyone else. Even the people who don’t know God are nice to their friends.” – Mt. 5:46-47 ERV

:

You see that? It is easy to love people who love them! We begin to like people so much when they show us care, we love people when they visit our sick bed and stay with us through our healing! We love people when they encourage us in the time of trouble and challenges, we love people when they condone our shortcomings and forgive us our wrongs… It is very good. However, what about people who want us dead? People who laughed at us when we’re sick? People who doesn’t agree with our opinions? People who hurt us by their speech and actions? What about them… Yes, our enemies! What about them?

:

It is in loving our enemies that we truly express the nature of God. Often times we focus on so many things called “sin”, we don’t want to offend God and so we avoid certain clothes, we ignore certain hairstyle, we pray morning and night, we attend Church and we think we’re being nice to God but then we are not living at peace with our neighbours, we are not living in love for our enemies! That is not what God wants from us because that is not His nature! The one and only thing God wants from us is to love our enemies as we love our friends! There is no other way to be perfect than this!

:

Perfection is not a dress code, it is not a hairstyle, it is not consistent attendance in Church, it is not love for your pastor and church members… It is love for your enemies! Jesus said

:

“What I am saying is that you must be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” – Mt. 5:43‭-‬48 ERV

:

Love for our enemies is what Jesus regards as perfection! We are in a world where many Christians spend time wishing their political leaders dead, where Christians spend time praying that their enemies should fall down and die! Where Christians abuse and insult people who doesn’t agree with them! Where intelligent and loving debates don’t exist… That way, we are not expressing the true nature of God, we are giving the world a wrong picture of who God is!

:

You can be like God, you can be perfect when you live in love with those who doesn’t love you! God is requesting for something more than this! This is the revival we should sort for! Healing the sick, raising the dead and all sort of miracles isn’t the revival we should be praying for… It is loving our enemies! When we are moved by compassion for all men, we will win more souls and touch more lives… Only in that manner can we genuinely pray for people and healing takes place!

God bless you!
