In most parts of Nigeria where I come from and indeed many other parts of Africa, it is not uncommon to hear Christians shouting “die by fire” during prayer sessions arranged against their enemies! This happens mostly among believers where Jesus is not preached and where issues of life is magnified beyond God. “Die by Fire” is a popular declaration known among Christians in our own part of the world! But the question has always been “is that the ideal?”
I don’t have issues with “…by fire!”, not at all! Asking God to answer you by fire is never a problem for me because it may also mean “God answer me sharp sharp”… However, there is a level you come up to, you won’t be asking God to answer you sharp sharp, you will be thanking Him for answered prayers when you have not seen results! Its a level of faith!
That someone decides to be ending all his or her declarations with fire isn’t a problem for me, its something they have built themselves with and sometimes they seem to have borrowed some of those ideas from Nollywood movies where fire would usually appear in the cause of prayers! But is that the ideal? There is a level you come up to, you will stop seeing problem and be so focused on the great things God has done. Paul wrote in Philippians 4:8
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.”
Yes, you hear people say “let that problem be destroyed by fire! Let that unemployment be destroyed by fire!! Let that anxiety is destroyed by fire!!! Let that sickness is consumed by fire!!!! Let every negativity in your life is destroyed by fire!!!!!”
My problem is not about those things… I join you to say a very big amen to that! Sometimes, people may not literally mean ‘fire’… The expression of fire have only come to stay in their head and so they communicate it. But, you will come to a level of faith where you don’t see problems anymore, they don’t just matter!
My concern is about praying the wrong prayers or making the wrong declarations. You shouldn’t be praying for your wicked uncle, aunt, neighbor and enemies to die by fire!!! It is very unchristian… Do you know that you may also be someone’s enemy? Do you know you may have wronged someone else too? That is why Jesus advised us to treat our enemies with love… Punish your enemies with love!
Jesus said “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” – Matthew 5:44-45
It may sound stupid but love those who hate you! Care for those who fight you… That is the only way to get it right! Allow God to fight your battles because they are no longer yours!
