THE FRUIT OF OUR SPIRIT

:
This is not a comprehensive teaching on the subject above but I’d like to explain certain things on this subject. What is the fruit of the Spirit? What does that term “fruit of the Spirit” means?
:
Many times we refer to the fruit of the Spirit as the fruits of the Holy Spirit as a distinct activity of the Holy Spirit in us but while it’s not entirely wrong to see it that way, that is not what the Bible talks about. The fruit of the Spirit simply means the features of our born again Spirit in contrast to the features of the flesh. When we simply put it as the workings of the Holy Spirit, it might mean what the Holy Spirit is yet to do in us, an ongoing process but it is not an ongoing process, it is a complete change that has already occurred in our Spirit. Let’s take a look at some Bible passages. Galatians 5:1
:
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled with the yoke of bondage.”
:
I needed to begin with this verse because Paul was asking people who already had liberty to stand in that liberty! So if they weren’t experiencing true freedom, it isn’t because they don’t have the full measure of it but because they are not standing in it, they aren’t walking in that light! And he wrote “…be not entangled with the yoke of bondage” which clearly shows that one who has freedom can also experience certain kinds of bondage which only happens when they aren’t standing firm in the liberty Christ has made available for them. Now, it is also in this manner that Paul wrote in verse 16
:
“This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
:
This is where many people fail it, they don’t understand Paul was talking about their born again spirit just the same way he was talking about their liberty in verse 1. We are Spirits housed in a body with emotions, we possess that born again Spirit as believers in Christ Jesus and Paul was simply saying thus “be tuned into your spiritual state other than the desires of the human nature. He wasn’t asking that we build up into spiritual giants; he was asking that we start manifesting our spiritual man other than the natural man which has been corrupted by the corruptions of this world. He wasn’t asking that maybe we close our eyes and wait till the Holy Spirit speaks before we take any steps.
:
I would relate very well with this as being some sort of a public figure. I know sometimes there were places I’d wanted to go, the natural me would desire to be their but then I say to myself “no, I am not supposed to be there… At least not me, others can but not me!” I also remember following certain ministerial ethics, not because I wanted to, those ethics were in fact opposed to my desires but I had to follow them at some point. Now, I was either acting as a public figure or leader and not according to my original desires. I decide to manifest as a leader where I should manifest as a leader and play and laugh around where my emotions are needed! That is what Paul was communicating in this portion of the Bible. He wrote in verse 17
:
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit; and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
:
Our human nature has the qualities of the flesh and our spiritual nature has the qualities of the Spirit. In most cases, they always oppose each other and therefore what we always want to do might not be what we should be doing! I remember having sexual desires at times; I would feel like just doing it! Oh come on… Don’t give me that look! But then, I would withdraw myself, fix my focus somewhere else and decide to starve my flesh of its desires. Other times, I would want to become selfish and gain a profit all to myself but then I decide to be sincere and let everyone have a fair-share… Yes, I desired sex, yes, I desired to be selfish, yes, I desired to lie, yes, I desired a lot of things my human nature dictates but then I decide not to walk in it! I don’t need to fast, pray, wait on God and hear a voice or have a dream before I know what to do… I just decide to express the features of my born again spirit. In my relationship, sometimes I want to think all about myself and what I am not gaining from it but then I decide to switch and manifest that which is in opposition to my human desires. I have a dual nature; one is superior to the other and let the superior rule… I am not perfect in it yet; I still have a lot of flaws and fail at times in maintaining the standards I am supposed to maintain because I am yet to attain to that perfect state when Jesus comes. But, I don’t have to relax and say “okay, till Jesus comes, let me just live anyhow my body wants me to” I must keep working out my salvation with total reverence to God. When the Bible says, “Work out your salvation”, we were being instructed to manifest as saved people!
:
Paul continued in verse 18
:
“But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law”
:
The law was given to the flesh and not to the Spirit. The flesh was subjected to the law because of its corruption and if we decide to live of the flesh, we remain subject to the laws given for it! But when we live by the Spirit, we are governed by the law of liberty and not that of Moses. James 2:25 calls the law guiding the believer as “the law of liberty”, a law that sets people free instead of the Law of Moses, a law that keeps the flesh under very strict check and bondage. I will always say, to certain point, every human on earth still needs a check on their excesses because we all do have excesses. That is why God has given us the government and law systems all over the world of which the Bible says in Romans 13:1-7 they have the power to punish offenders but people who do good have no reason to fear them! You see that? The law was set up to curb freedom for the flesh due to its corruption!
:
The human nature remains selfish; there is no single believer who ever lived on earth that didn’t wrestle with the flesh to overcome selfish desires. Every single fruit of the flesh is summarized in one word “selfishness”, if we sum it all up and look for a word that defines it, it is selfishness because sin came as a result of selfishness. The Bible says in Genesis 3:6 that the woman saw how beautiful the tree was and thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. She ate the fruit because she wanted to please herself. Paul listed all the works of the flesh which includes adultery, fornication, hatred, heresies, drunkenness and all of them! One would wonder “is that part of my human nature?” I will quickly answer “you cannot avoid any of them when you decide to be led by your human desires”
:
Being born again doesn’t guarantee that the temptations of unfaithfulness wouldn’t arise! You only overcome it by manifesting the nature of your Spirit. Something happened to me some time ago, I was receiving calls from a young girl who had all the “sweetness” most men would say they want and guess what? She wanted to come over to my place so we can have a good time together with “great sex!” I was not an unbeliever, I had just finished studying and speaking in other tongues before that devil-sponsored call came. You think I just came over it like the way I detest things I don’t like? No! The call came for days with palatable offer and I decided to call my partner with whom I had a relationship with on Phone, I just needed to share it with her and get encouraged… It didn’t come as I expected. It wasn’t something she would do for me anyway. I was alone in my room, bored and very bored the more as I thought of the call and how to deal with it. Just then, I started saying to myself “George, you are bigger than this! Don’t settle for foods from devil when God has already prepared yours for you.” I quickly blocked off that number, wiped her messages and sent my partner a text saying “I pledge to remain faithful to our cause”. There was this relief and peace that came with it! I didn’t do it because it was my human desire; I decided to manifest my spiritual nature against my human nature! I would share countless experiences where I had walked out from not because I desired to but because I decided to break off from the desires of the flesh! Anytime I ever gave in to the flesh, it wasn’t because a temptation bigger than me had come but because I hadn’t manifested the works of my Spirit.
:
I love using my experiences as examples other than tell a tale of another person just to appear better! No! We are in this struggle together and we are winning together the battles we have already won! As you can see, the human desire is very opposite of what the Spirit wants. If we go on living normal lives according to our desires, we will not live the best of us because that isn’t how God designed us originally. We are created in Christ Jesus to show forth God’s glory, the purpose of our existence is summarized in those few words “to show forth God’s glory” and we cannot do that by living subject to our own desires. We must keep striving to do His will until His will become our own will. As I had said before, it isn’t the fruit of the Holy Spirit like many have believed which must have reflected in some bible translations too but the fruit of our spirit! We are the fruit bearing part of Jesus as fruits don’t come forth from the tree but from the branches of the tree. We are the fruit bearing part of God! Jesus said in John 15:5
:
“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
:
This is why God is concerned about the fruit we produce. Now let’s proceed to that part of Paul’s letter that clearly showed us the features of our born again Spirit. Let’s look at verse 22-23 of Galatians 5
:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
:
These are not the fruits of the Holy Spirit but the fruits of our own born again Spirit, I am interpreting in the context of what Paul wrote. I have also taught this place as the fruit of the Holy Spirit in the past but like I will always say, we grow every day. Paul had showed the workings of human desires and also needed to show us some of the fruits of our spirit nature which we need to work out. So, you already have love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance and so on in your born again Spirit! We aren’t waiting for the Holy Spirit to build it up in us, we have received it in its full measure, we have received all of it and there is none left that we have not received! We just need to start working it out, to make it a practice until it becomes a default for us! You don’t have to fast and pray to have peace or love; it is already inside of you. In John 15:11 Jesus had said
:
“These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full”
:
You see that? Joy is a fruit of our Spirit, it remains in us and we experience its fullness when we walk in it! When you look at all the fruits of your spirit, you discover something in common; they are selfless and God-glorifying! You don’t have to depend on the happenstances around you for peace and joy; you just start producing it regardless of circumstances! Even if you found yourself crying, you can remind yourself “Oh! I remember I have peace and joy!” drop your fleshy garment of tears and wear your garment of praise! Paul wrote in verse 25
:
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit”
:
You see that? We live in the Spirit already, our born again Spirit is active and not dormant. Even if you aren’t walking in it, it is active with all the features intact. But to experience it, you must walk in it. Knowing the truth and walking in the truth are two different things as the power of truth is experienced by walking in it.
:
God’s word tells us all we need to know about our born again Spirit. As you meditate on it, you discover who you are and you walk in the light of it!
:
God bless you.
