“Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Philippians 2:7
It is important to understand what the Bible was saying when it said Jesus made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant! God have always sent Prophets in the Old Testaments to communicate His word or command to them. These people have always served as God’s servants in various capacities and finally, we had God coming Himself but not in the form of God but in the form of human! God came as Jesus and it is important to know that Jesus is both human and divine, in the sense that it is God wearing flesh so as to be physically operational on earth.
Jesus never stopped being God while on earth, He didn’t go on a temporal leave but that human flesh brought so many limitations to Jesus on earth in the sense that He could only function like a man. One big thing is, knowing that Jesus is God in flesh also helps us understand how God wants us to live our lives because we were made in God’s image and therefore how Jesus lived is the only model of what perfect humanity is. Jesus lived the life of love, showing love to men, women and children alike!
There was no such moment when Jesus was not God and that moment when He reached the God-status! Jesus was God even before He allowed Himself to be born into the earth and He wasn’t strip off being God when He was born on earth, He remained God! What the Bible is saying when it talks about Jesus making himself nothing simply talks about Jesus subjecting himself to the limitations brought into this world by sin! The divinity of Jesus was veiled behind the flesh and while Jesus could do amazing miracles in the flesh, Jesus still had those limitations humans could have on earth.
Nobody emptied Jesus or made Him nothing! He did that by Himself which means the power to be whatever He wanted to was exclusively His! Jesus is simply God who took up the form of man, He came in the disguise of God’s servant but never stopped being God! Hear Him “the Father and I are one”- John 10:30 and somewhere else the Bible says in John 1:18 “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.” Jesus didn’t get empty of divinity, He emptied Himself of divine privileges that only God would exercise! He operated as a man on earth but is presently operating as a Spirit in us by the Holy Spirit. Jesus came to have our experience, He felt tired, got hungry, experienced pain, cried and even felt the pressure associated with temptations. There was even a time He cried “if this cup can pass over me.” – Matthew 26:39. Jesus felt all of those things but never gave in to them! He set a good example for us showing us how we could defeat pain and fear! He still submitted to the will of God and went further to the cross.
Concerning Jesus the Bible says in Philippians 2:5 “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” We can only know the kind of attitude that Jesus had by studying His earthly life! He was humble and loving, we would never have known to what point God is love if Jesus never dwelt among us in the flesh! Now, we can go on to live like Jesus! We have the power inside of us to live like Him. If Jesus lived a life of love as human, it means we can also live that life as we await the day the flesh will give way and we experience the true nature of who we are in the Spirit.
God bless you!
