In the book of Acts 9:36-42 we read about a certain woman named Dorcas who has taken upon herself to cater for so many widows in providing clothing for them. When she died, the Bible records that her kindness kept speaking for her, the widows kept showing Apostle Peter the evidence of her kindness. The rest of the story is that Dorcas was raised from the dead. We must understand that it is not everything in the kingdom that is gift, there are still rewards and God is still rewarding every act of love that you display. God have already set it into motion that your kindness will always be rewarded. There can’t be any form of genuine kindness without love. You can imagine the faith of those widows! They didn’t bury her when she died, they rather took her up and laid her body in a room probably hoping that God will not allow this one person in whom they have found succour to leave them at such a time.
There are two things I want us to note her. Her kindness didn’t stop her from being sick but it stopped death from triumphing over her. Truth is, anyone would get healed and be raised from the dead if that is God’s will but there are things that happen in the realm of the Spirit because there was a demand! Dorcas wasn’t the first person to have died of sickness, there must have probably being others who died but there was no demand of resurrection on their behalf! For Dorcas, her act of love and kindness spoke on her behalf! This was not about giving to a certain Pastor or for a certain anointing! She was not giving because she wanted a release of double portion, her giving was not sponsored by want and greed but by necessity and responsibility she has taken upon herself! Let me make it clear, it is not that her kindness raised her from the dead but her kindness caused that demand for her life!
Unfortunately, we talk about love so much but we hardly act it. An act of love is a million times superior to a million words of love. Words are nice and powerful when they are backed up with actions. It makes no sense saying you love someone when you cannot show it and believe me, kindness has a way of paying back whether you expected it or not. The Bible says in Galatians 6:10 “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
Look at that! God isn’t demanding what you cannot do from you, God isn’t demanding you do exactly what Dorcas did! God isn’t demanding that you do what Mother Theresa did but there is a demand on what you can do, on what your ability isn’t limited to. As much as you have the opportunities, do good to every man and more especially those people you call “brethren!” The Bible is very clear on this, to be kind means to do good to all men! The display of Christianity should be a life of kindness! Being kind means being generous with what you have as much as you have it! It may be materials and it may be emotional but as much as you have, you ought to be kind with it. Your claim of righteousness means nothing when you aren’t walking in love!
Feel it all you want but love can only be true when it becomes an action! Spoken words can only become tangible when they come alive and walk among men! When we say things but people don’t see it, our speech is dead! How can we say we are Christians but we aren’t doing what Jesus did! It doesn’t end in saying what Jesus said, we have to do what He did too! The Bible says in Act 10:38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.” Just like Jesus, we have also being anointed and we saw that in my previous teaching that we have the same anointing as Jesus had. The Bible said Jesus was going around doing good! You may be teaching good but until you start doing good, your words are of little or no effect! We gather in Churches, we cry and shed tears for fire, we jump and get excited at the word, it is all fine and great but when our Christianity becomes a tangible reality is when we start living in love, forgiving people who wronged us even without their consent, by being good to all men and by taking responsibility of certain people as much as we can.
We have not understood the height of God’s love for us if we do not walk in love and absolute kindness! How can you say you understand that while you were yet a sinner Christ died for you and you still have grudges for that person who did you wrong? How can you say God loved you even when you never loved Him and you still do good only to those who do good to you? True understanding of love is proven in just loving people regardless of what they do to us. It is not just in saying “I love you” it must be acted upon.
You may not last forever on this earth but your act of kindness will defend your generation, it will speak for you and it will preserve your name in the sands of time. Why not choose to be famous for love? Why not choose to be famous for kindness that everybody will be willing to stand for you when you are faced with difficulties! Kindness doesn’t just happen, it is a virtue that must be learnt! Kindness is not what you do when you feel like, you can make it a habit and act it in reflex! There is a reward for every display of kindness. I may not be able to tell you the form in which that kindness will come but God knows how best to reward kindness! You may face difficulties even after your display of kindness; Dorcas faced death and yet she was kind! Whatever you are facing isn’t the end of you! Just be kind, it is the provision for the future. There is a realm of the manifestation of God’s power in you that you can never get to until you condition your heart to act compassionately. Jesus wasn’t just acting anyhow, the Bible says Matthew 9:36 “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Jesus would always have compassion and this only happens as a result of love! Until you are moved with compassion, there is a height of God’s power in you that you cannot manifest as regards with healing the sick and assisting the needy!
You aren’t being kind if your understanding of giving is just to give to your Pastor or for the building project hoping that you will be recognized! For many believers today, giving is only done right when given to Pastors. I even heard a Pastor preach that the only correct way to give is to give your Pastor because they are the only ones that have the power to bless you! That is not true, that is not scriptural! Many also argue that Charity isn’t part of our calling! Yea, anyone can do charity but God wants us to do it too! God recognizes your act of kindness and you will not go unrewarded! We are becoming too selfish, we pray for ourselves, desire for ourselves and the only thing we have for the needy is “may God help you!” It is through you that God will help them! You are the extension of God’s hand on earth.
The good you do today will come back tomorrow in massive folds! Just be like Jesus and do what He did. Sometimes people want to blame the poor for being poor and we say things like “poverty is a mindset!” Poverty may be a mindset, that’s fine and I won’t argue it but never feel people are guilty for being poor! Nobody enjoys being poor, nobody want to end poor! Even poor people dream of having their own houses and their own cars! Instead of blame people for being poor, help them! You don’t need too much investigation to help people. Do good to all men!
Don’t expect payback from people you did good to. Some will even deny you and never appreciate you! There are people who won’t stand in for you like they did for Dorcas, some will not just deny you, they will also paint your name black but do not let anybody change who you are and always know that men will always lack ability to pay back! People may not pay back your kindness but God can! In being kind to people, always have it at the back of your mind that it is God you are being kind to. Jesus said when you feed the poor, it is Him you are feeding! The Bible says in Matthew 25:35-40
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
Now you see, when you help the needy, you are helping Jesus! Jesus wasn’t referring to giving of weekly offerings and tithes and all of that! Whatever you give for the running of Church meetings and activities isn’t charity, you are part of that assembly and therefore the responsibility to join in footing bills is on you! But when it comes to helping the poor, you are directly doing it for Jesus because He has made you the extension of His hands! Charity is God’s work, by giving to charity and by being kind to people, you are standing in the place of God to be a provider! God will never overlook that! God takes it personal when you help the needy and Jesus says “thanks for feeding me” whenever you feed the poor.
This is the mystery of kindness and this is why it is so important to God! Kindness is sacrifice, a sacrifice you must be willing to make! Kindness isn’t just Godly, it is Spiritual and it touches the very heart of God! When you are living a life of kindness, you are touching God in a way many people don’t. Just imagine a prostitute being counted as a righteous person in the Bible; her act of kindness earned her divine respect! The Bible says concerning her in Hebrews 11:31 “By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.” Rehab was a prostitute and the Bible didn’t report she stopped being a prostitute but she showed an act of kindness! This place tells us clearly that without faith we can’t properly show genuine kindness! Do you know why people give to charity and still stay happy? There is faith involved in their giving! You act of kindness is a great proof of your faith and not your speaking in tongues!
Jesus lived a life of kindness! He didn’t just preach, He showed it! Now, we can do the same. There is just only one religion that is acceptable to God and the Bible tells us in James 1:27 “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” This is the only religion you should practice; kindness!
