DON’T DESPISE THE WEAK | Alive! Daily Devotional

Don't despise the weak

“Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.”
~ 1 Corinthians 8:9

Some things may not be wrong but we must not do them if it is going to affect our neighbour. God wants us to put people who may not have grown in knowledge into consideration when doing certain things. We have been set free from the law but we shouldn’t live the life of lawlessness. God’s love in us constrains us to walk in love and when we walk in love we have fulfilled all the law. God loves the weak as much as He loves the strong. He is patient with the weak knowing that with time the weak will get stronger. And who is considered the weak? They are those who are yet to come to the knowledge of Christ but they have already believed.

1. Our actions towards the weak should be that which encourages them.
2. If it will affect the conscience of the weak, don’t do it.

The Bible says in Romans 14:1 “Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on his opinions.” This means that as much as we keep teaching the weak with love and patience, we shouldn’t discard their opinions and judge them for it. Many times we make the mistakes of engaging those who are weak in heated arguments. We argue about meat, argue about dressing and so many other things which will not add or remove anything to our salvation. Sometimes these arguments become a stumbling block to them. Sometimes we engage in activities that wouldn’t help their faith because their faith is weak. God wants us to put them into consideration even as we live our daily lives.

Criticism isn’t the way to correct a weak believer, love is the way. There are words you may not have to use towards them, there are things you may not have to do in their presence especially when they seem to be struggling with it. When they expose their ignorance, judging them is never the godly thing to do. Rather, teach them gently and let them also learn from the way you live your life. You may be right, it may not be a sin but you must not do it if someone around you still struggles with it.

“Regardless of what I know, I chose to walk in love and patience towards those who are still ignorant of the truth. I will rather be patient with them and never judge their opinion; I rather teach them the truth in humility knowing that they will grow with time.”

Thank you, Lord, for reminding me that my approach towards those who are weak in faith should be that of love. I receive the wisdom to help and address them in a way your word becomes clearer to them.
