I was thinking about this yesterday and I realized that a lot of people are giving satan credit for what he isn’t even powerful enough to do, they give him credit for what he hasn’t even tried doing and this way they make him even more popular. In some so-called “churches”, the devil is more popular than Jesus. People talk about and pray about the devil so much than they talk about Jesus.
You may not be familiar with this experience if you aren’t attending some African Churches where believers have to go through a series of deliverance. How can someone say he is saved and still go ahead to queue up for deliverance from the devil and his demons? Do they really understand what salvation means? The word “salvation” is gotten from the Greek word “sozo” and “soteria”, this same word means “deliverance, breakthrough, liberty” and so on. Concerning salvation, the Bible reports that we have been saved out of darkness into God’s marvellous light! Jesus said that He has overcome the world and the Bible makes it clear that God has found a dwelling place in us. How then can we claim the Holy Spirit is in us and then we also claim a believer in Christ Jesus is possessed by a demon?
How about other natural experiences we have that we give the devil credit for? The devil enjoys when we give him credit for what he can’t do because it makes him appear strong to some people. Some people escaped accident and instead of testifying and giving glory to God, they publicise the devil by starting out with “the devil tried killing me by accident…” What if the devil isn’t even powerful enough to try killing you? What if it was just the carelessness of a driver? What if it was the result of a faulty car that was not fixed?
We blame the devil for our own mistakes, we blame the devil for our own carelessness and this way we give him too much credit. In various parts of Africa, the devil is given credit for sleep paralysis and people even have a name for the demon responsible for that while sleep paralysis is a medical condition! Some people blame the devil for their failures in business while the devil is too weak to destroy their business.
I am not trying to make the devil look good, the devil isn’t good but the devil isn’t strong. As a Christian, what I know about the devil is that he has been defeated, he destroys people through ignorance and he is called the chief of lies and the founder of same. The lies of the devil include that “he made your business fail”, “he destroyed your relationship”, “he caused those exam failures” and so on.
You are the one with the powers to succeed or fail in your business and relationships, God blessed us from the foundations of this earth to multiply and subdue the earth, he blessed us with fruitfulness and this blessing is without repentance that is why you don’t have to be a Christian to be rich. The Bible says that God blesses the works of our hands, we may experience challenges here and there but the works of our hands will pay off! You will never see a place in the Bible where the devil was given credit for everything. Paul didn’t ask those who don’t have a job to pray against the spirit of joblessness or spirit of poverty, he asked them to look for jobs and start working!
When Dorcas died, there was no mention of the devil. When someone fell off the window, there was no mention of the devil, when Paul experienced shipwreck, there was no mention of the devil when Paul had series of problems, there was no mention of the devil and not every single sickness was credited to the Devil or his demons, some were, some were not. You don’t see the Apostles casting out the devil from believers in Christ Jesus even when they were sick, you don’t see them crediting a single challenge of the believer to the devil. But in some African churches, when lights go off, the devil is blamed, when church equipment becomes faulty, they start casting out devils from the equipment. Some Christians cannot stay for 24hours without making mention of the devil.
You will see a Church that doesn’t engage in soul-winning blaming the devil for the low turn up in their services! How can people turn up for services when they don’t engage in serious evangelistic outreach? The Apostles set a standard that we must look up to, they committed themselves to teach the gospel and they seldom talked about the devil! They presented the devil as who he is, one who has been defeated!
When the devil is trying to convince you in your mind that he is the cause of all your problems, don’t entertain it! Just as the devil has no hand in the death of Jesus because Jesus gave himself over, he has no hand in most things you experience. When next you experience a challenge, the first thing that should come to your mind isn’t the devil! Don’t give him credit for what he cannot even do, don’t give him reasons to pride in what is at your own mercies.
God is not responsible for every bad thing happening to you and the devil isn’t too powerful to be responsible for them either! Who then is responsible? It may be you or your environment. The devil may probably never want you to be rich but he can’t make you poor either. To be rich or poor depends on you or your environment. Some things are problems created by your earthly fathers, some are problems created by you or the government! What the devil does is that he takes advantage of our mind when we give him room, he takes advantage of our weaknesses when we give him room! He cannot certain things , he simply depends on our own power, our own ability to hurt ourselves and others!
If we can keep our focus on what God has done for us rather than what the devil is doing, we are exercising the victory we already have. If we can rise from our failures without wondering which type of demon caused it or which witch doctor in our village caused it, we can use the energy we have to praise God in every situation rather than engage in false “spiritual warfare”. I may not know how the devil engages with unbelievers or the extent of power he has over them but I very well know that the believer in Christ Jesus has defeated the devil through the victory we have in Christ and there is never a time the devil can recapture a believer! Believers can only give room to the devil by the way of their minds. This means the devil can use the powers of believers against them when they give him access to a place that should be full of the word. You are a powerful person and not the devil!
These are verses of the Bible that will help your understanding of victory!
“And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” – Colossians 2:15 NIV
“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” – Hebrews 2:14-15 NIV
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” – 1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV
Instead of focusing on the devil, focus on God’s greatness and walk in the light of the victory you have in Jesus. The devil will get crazier when you don’t give him credit for everything, he wants to be in all your discussions and this way you make him popular. Let’s talk about Jesus, let’s give more thanks than we complain about the devil. He is not worth it.
God bless you.
