Easy Yoke, Light Burden

The law of the Old Testament was a heavy burden, the burden wasn’t designed for us to carry, it acted like a scale, it weighs us and shows us our limits, it reveals our weakness and how we can do nothing aside from Jesus. The burden was heavy, too heavy that no one could come close to living up to it’s standard.

Then Jesus happened. He was and is our salvation from that burden, this burden was broken into 600 written rules that must be kept and hundreds of unwritten rules. Jesus didn’t save us from some selected rules, he saved us from every burden, from that law in its entirety and from every limitation. Hence, Jesus said

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”- Matthew 11:28‭-‬30 NLT

Jesus didn’t only set us free from that yoke, he offered us rest and also empowered us by the Holy Spirit through whom he teaches us. It is the instructions and leading of the Holy Spirit that he referred to as “easy yoke” and “light burden”. As we walk with the Lord, we grow in the knowledge of his word and the realities of his word become a tangible experience that reflects for the world to see.

The easy yoke and light burden that Jesus gives is not the law of tithing, the law of first fruit, the law of burnt offering and every other law that certain people pin you down with, it is simply a burden of followership. Jesus wants you to walk with him so that he can make you become what he wants you to be. He wants you to walk in his love so that by the way you live your life, other people will encounter his light. No wonder the Bible tells us

“In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” – Matthew 5:16 NLT

You see, Jesus wants you to do good to all men, to walk in love and forgiveness, to stay in the place of his word and enjoy sweet fellowship of the Holy Spirit, to engage in your daily life with reverence to God.

Unfortunately, many believers have been confused as to what this burden is. They think it’s the burden of tithing, the burden of first fruit and so on. They think the burden of Jesus is a lighter version of the law. No, the law is obsolete, the law is done with! Jesus gave us an entirely new life, we have a fresh slate! Let no one deceive you or cage you down as a result of their greed.

When Jesus talked about the heavy burden and labour, he was talking about the systems of the law, they were systems of heavy works, systems of mandatory works that were only shadows of the real thing. Jesus delivered us from all of these laws, we were completely set free! Hence, Jesus said

“It is finished…” John 19:30

Because sin depended on the law to be powerful, sin lost its power the day Jesus fulfilled and ended the law. Listen carefully, the law has ended. Paul wrote saying

“Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.” Romans 6:14 NLT

Not that we are without a commitment in Jesus. However, his own yoke is easy, his own yoke is not the yoke of slavery in the sense of what the word means, it’s a yoke of followership hence the need to say “… And learn of me”.

His yoke is our submission to his word wherein we find rest for our soul. You have been set free from the burdens and heavy yoke of the law, you can enjoy your freedom in Christ Jesus and live for him! Take off the shackles and walk in this consciousness.

I call you blessed.
