Part of our duty as ministers of the New Covenant is to rebuke and show those who teach false doctrine that they are wrong. This way, we are preventing them from deceiving people further. The motive of false teachers is one thing… To take advantage of the ignorance of believers to satisfy their belly. Apostle Paul used very strong words for these people and how we are to treat them and their messages
“For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others. This is especially true of those who insist on circumcision for salvation. They must be silenced, because they are turning whole families away from the truth by their false teaching. And they do it only for money. Even one of their own men, a prophet from Crete, has said about them, “The people of Crete are all liars, cruel animals, and lazy gluttons.” This is true. So reprimand them sternly to make them strong in the faith. They must stop listening to Jewish myths and the commands of people who have turned away from the truth.” – Titus 1:10-14 NLT
Paul calls them all manner of names.
- They are REBELLIOUS people because they rebel against the very truth that sets free.
- They are useless talkers because the end goal of all their talks are to deceive the less discerning.
Paul insists that these folks must be silenced because they are turning believers away from the truth. Paul agrees with a Prophet from Crete by affirming that these false teachers are all “liars, CRUEL ANIMALS and LAZY GLUTTONS”. Their god is their belly and everything they do is for the purpose oftheir belly.
If Paul is still on Earth today, he wouldn’t condone the kind of false teaching and teachers that we have condoned all in the name of “unity”. These days, you are the odd man out whenever you question these teachings that promote legalism instead of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. You are called a rebel whenever you rebuke and call out false teachings as wrong! If we go few verses above where we had quoted earlier, we can have an understanding of what Apostle Paul calls the truth.
“This letter is from Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I have been sent to proclaim faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives. This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God—who does not lie—promised them before the world began.” – Titus 1:1-2 NLT
Concerning this truth, Paul said it shows us how to live godly. How? It is by the confidence it exposes us to; the confidence that we have eternal life, which God has promised before the world began. Paul didn’t forget to remind us that God doesn’t lie! The truth can only build our confidence that we are saved forever, it doesn’t burden us with legalism, it doesn’t burden us with all manner of laws, it simply brings us to an understanding of the depth of love that God has shown us through Jesus. By this love, we begin to experience the transformative power of God!
I call you blessed!
